Every year we reflect on the past year for hip-hop.
Last year was all about fresh sounds, but this year?
It felt like a true comeback of ‘old’ hip-hop. Legends like Pete Rock, Common, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe, Ghostface Killah, LL Cool J, and Redman reminded us why they’re icons, dropping albums that brought back that classic energy.
But it wasn’t just about the OGs.
Industry vets (those who aren’t ‘old school’ but have already made their mark) also dominated. Eminem, Tyler, the Creator, 21 Savage, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Vince Staples left little room for the rookies to shine on the charts.
Of course, hip-hop never stops evolving, and we did hear some fresh sounds. But overall, this year was a solid return to classic hip-hop vibes.
And yet… our Album of the Year goes to someone from the next generation.
An artist that we classified as “one to watch” last year.
